Prepping For My First Solo Photoshoot

I have my first photoshoot tomorrow.

I have my first photoshoot tomorrow.

I have my first photoshoot tomorrow.

(Not from a photoshoot, but from a photography meetup).

I don’t know what I’m doing. But I have a mood board. My client has seen it. She reached out to me to ask if I’d be interested in photographing her and I said yes!

Here’s the mood board.

I have a collection photos from photographers and models I admire, so I can draw some inspiration from that. I spoke to a model friend of mine who lives in London. She said models should know how to pose already and sent me an Instagram video of her doing modeling poses. It looked like a workout! I’ll have to ask her if I can photograph her when she makes her way into the US again.

My biggest concern is not being able to find a “good location.” I don’t think I have a good eye for that (and I worry too much about what people think).

Here’s my tentative plan right now:

Meet in West Village. I have a couple of ideas for shots I’d like to try out — I’m sure she has ideas as well.

Pose in the middle of the street (Grove, Bleecker, etc).

That’s Grove Street (via Google Maps)

Sit on steps of an interesting building (Brownstone, storefront, etc).

Closeup of face, framed by colorful leaves.

Reflection photo.

Sitting down, looming image.

I hope I’m able to capture what I see in my head. I think the biggest problem I have is that I don’t really know how to communicate with the model. I should be more relaxed, but I sometimes find myself tongue-tied!

Someone once told me, “They’re just people, too.” I need to remember that. I really do.
